Syllabus

Overview

This is 45 hours of in person instruction.  This course prepares the student to become certified as Fire Inspector 1.

 Students will learn how to research, interpret, and apply applicable codes and standards during inspection and plan review activities. The course objective is to familiarize students with the Florida Fire Prevention Code, including the Florida-amended versions of NFPA 1 and NFPA 101, as well as Florida Statutes Chapter 633 and the Florida Administrative Code 69A.

The fee for the course is $250.

Required Materials

Florida Fire Prevention Code 8th or 9th Edition, copy of Florida Statues Chapter 633 and Florida Administrative Code 69A.  Electrical devices for internet access.

Instructor Information:

Donald McKiernan is a Florida certified Instructor 3, Inspector I, II, Fire Code Administer, Firefighter, Paramedic, Officer I, II.  I am a graduate of the managing officer program at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Attendance:

Students are required to attend all sessions of the course. • Excused absences - Students are permitted excused absences totaling no more than 10% of class (4.5 hours maximum), the instructor shall be the sole determining authority in the determination of an excused absence and may assign supplemental work to make up for missed class time. • Unexcused absences – The instructor shall be the sole determining authority in the determination of an unexcused absence (i.e., “no call, no show”). The instructor has no obligation to offer the student an opportunity to make up assignments, including quizzes and/or exams, but may do so at his/her discretion.

Academic Dishonesty Policy

Academic misconduct includes cheating, plagiarism, falsification of records, unauthorized possession of examinations, intimidation, and all other actions that may improperly affect the evaluation of a student’s academic performance or achievement; assisting others in any such act; or attempts to engage in such acts. Any incident of academic misconduct will result in the student being dropped from the course and the student’s sponsoring agency being notified of the incident.

Course Participation

The course utilizes lectures, open discussions, and skills practice achieving the learning objectives. Every student is expected to:

  • Come to course prepared to actively participate in discussions.
  • Knowledge of text prior to the next class session.
  • Complete all homework assignments.
  • Respect the beliefs, opinions, and values of other students.
  • Have an open mind about the issues being discussed.

Final Project

Write at least a 400-word essay about Florida Fire Prevention code NFPA 1 and NFPA 101, as well as Florida Statutes Chapter 633 and the Florida Administrative Code 69A.

Grading

Students must achieve a minimum cumulative score of 70% to pass this course. Course grades are determined from assignments and activities including homework, projects, quizzes, exams, and presentations.

Job Performance Requirements

Given information from discussion and reading materials, the student will satisfy the Job Performance Requirements (JPR) of the applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and any applicable skill sheets.

NFPA 1031, Standard for Fire Safety Inspector I shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Sections 4.2 – 4.4 2014 Edition. In addition, the Fire Safety Inspector I shall meet the requirements of Section 4.2 of NFPA 472.
